Here at VeloChef we believe with the right ingredients just about anything is possible, especially when it's FUN.  It all starts with the right attitude, or for those in Boulder, Colorado, it's altitude.

First of all let's consider that the person actually wants to lose weight, but in a healthy manner as a part of an exercise program.  Certainly, if there are any issues you need to check with your doctor about, please do just to make sure all systems are A-OK.

One of the great things about having a motor assist on a bicycle is how it makes you feel more confident to tackle longer rides than ever before.  Certainly, the more one actually pushes the bike the better, but let's remember there is no "guilt-o-meter" attached, and the idea is to have fun, AND get in shape.  Losing weight is what happens in the process.

Having an electric power-assisted bike will allow the rider to confidently go out for trips to the store, school, restaurant, gym, or just to visit.  Without the concern of hills on the return trip, not enough time to make it out and back, or carrying the extra weight from the shopping event.

Another idea is to simply go out with the kids, grandkids, or your significant other and arrive at the destination having worked "enough" to feel it, but not too much to cause you discomfort.  Remember, it will take time to get the legs and body conditioned for more strenuous rides.

At this writing, spring (09) is just around the corner, and I too need to shed some of the extra layer I managed to place around my waist over the winter (15+lbs).  To accomplish this, I will start out slowly and simply enjoy the scenery for about 4 - 6 weeks.  Then, as my body adjusts to a more regular regime of riding, several times a week, I will begin pushing a bit harder.  Going out too hard, too quickly, is a not a recipe for success...take it easy, and then work into it.

So, is it possible to have fun and lose weight?  Absolutely! A motorized bike, or better yet a trike, can help a person find new excitement in their life, while at the same time shedding some weight along the way.  The assistance of the motor will energize you and give you the confidence to keep your body moving in the direction of a slimmer and healthier person...you.

I really like the idea of the functionality of an electric bike. It's totally understandable why someone would choose to just 'hop in the car' for their errands or simply to go for a drive in the hills.

However, the freedom with the electric bike to choose your own intensity level could be a great impetus to create a change in behavior. It can literally 'lighten our load' as you've already mentioned. Thanks for the great post!
